Intel® Parallel Studio XE and Intel® System Studio products version 2016 require an upgrade of existing licenses of older versions.
What to do for IT administrators:
Update Intel® Software License Manager with the new 2016 license
On Windows servers use one of the following:
lmtools GUI tool
Open a Windows command prompt and invoke
"c:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Intel\LicenseServer\lmtools.exe"
Select the 'Start/Stop/Reread' tab
Click on the 'ReRead License File' button and browser for the new license file to be re-read.
lmutils command line tool
Open a Windows command prompt
Change into directory:
"c:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Intel\LicenseServer"
Execute the command:
lmutil lmreread -c <new_license_file>
All other parameters used with the initial start of the Intel® Software License Manger (e.g. -l <logfile>) remain active, so no need to specify the full parameter list with the lmreread command again.
On Linux / OS X servers:
Execute the command:
<flexlm_dir>/lmutil lmreread -c <new_license_file>
All other parameters used with the initial start of the Intel® Software License Manger (e.g. -l <logfile>) remain active, so no need to specify the full parameter list with the lmreread command again.
What to do for users on client installations:
If the license was set up correctly, nothing needs to be changed as the license info is being retrieved from the license server when performing a product upgrade on client machines. However, it may be the case, that client licenses haven't been set up correctly and the user must apply some hand-tuning.
What is the correct way of installing a client license?
These are the ways to use a local license on a client machine correctly:
- Use local license file
License directories are the following:
Windows:
c:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Intel\Licenses\ (on 64-bit Windows OS)
c:\Program Files\Common Files\Intel\Licenses\ (on 32-bit Windows OS)
Linux:
/opt/intel/licenses (on a (sudo) root installation)
$HOME/intel/licenses (on a user installation)
OS X:
/Users/Shared/Library/Application Support/Intel/Licenses
License file must have extension .lic and must be of contents (<servername> and <port> must be identical to the entries in the server license file):
SERVER <servername> ANY <port>
USE_SERVER
- Use license environment variable
The variable must be specified as follows:
INTEL_LICENSE_FILE=<port>@<servername>
This environment variable can be included into startup scripts (under Linux for example in the .bashrc file) or specified as system/user variable under the System Properties in Windows.

How can users get access to floating license downloads and support?
They just need to register the floating license serial number under an email account that matches the email domain of the primary license owner.
Prerequisite: The email (sub) domains must match. That means only users of the same company, subsidiary or department can share the floating license. Can registered users upgrade a floating license to version 2016?
Yes. Every registered user of a floating license can login to the Intel® Registration Center and perform the licenses version upgrade.
Caution: Floating licenses that have been upgraded just after the 2016 product release may have lost all registered users during migration. In such cases all users need to re-register the upgraded license serial number.Do stand-alone packages such as Intel® Inspector XE, Intel® Advisor XE, Intel® VTune Amplifier™ XE need an upgrade to version 2016?
No, as there are no feature codes update in the licenses for these components. The Intel® Registration Center doesn't provide an upgrade for these standalone products.
