BMX, or bicycle motocross, is an intense sport that involves racing at extreme speed on bicycles, in a motocross style, on tracks with an inline start, and obstacles along the way. The term BMX also refers to the bicycle that has been designed specifically for dirt and motocross cycling.[1]
The history of BMX dates back to the very early 1970s, when children began racing their bikes on dirt tracks in southern California, inspired by the motocross stars of the time. A 1972 documentary entitled On Any Sunday is often credited with inspiring the movement nationally in the United States because its opening seven-minute scene focused on kids riding Sting-Rays off-road.[2] This led to BMX racing becoming a phenomenon by the middle of the decade, and by that time, children were racing standard road bikes off-road, around purpose-built tracks.
BMX grabbed the attention of thousands of kids across the United States. Boys and girls on their modified bicycles were seen jamming through the berms and jumps of any available dirt lot they could find. Imitation lead to innovation and quickly the kids were performing tricks and "getting air" as organized races and tracks began popping up all over. By 1977, pockets of loosely organized BMX races dotted the nation from coast to coast.[3]
Today, BMX is still widely popular and there are many reasons athletes participate in the exciting sport. As well as being a physical activity that can keep you in shape, BMX riding can allow you to challenge yourself on a daily basis. BMX riders must push themselves to learn new tricks and progress their level of riding.
Riding your BMX allows you to become a part of a worldwide community. BMX racing even became an official Olympic sport at the 2008 Beijing games. While certain contemporary sports are only prevalent in some countries, BMX hails as a popular sport across the globe. The expansive terrain of BMX will allow you to participate in some form of riding no matter what corner of the world you happen to find yourself in.
With that said, some aspects of BMX riding can be challenging. The sport is physically demanding, and also requires the proper equipment, which doesn’t necessarily come cheap. Additionally, any medical conditions could serve as a prevention from participation. Finally, you may not live in a southern California, an environment that is conducive to enjoying some adventure year round.
