Problem: Unable to install the Intel® VTune Amplifier XE VTSS++ driver.
Intel® VTune Amplifier XE drivers are automatically built and installed while installing the Intel® VTune Amplifier XE. However if user finds that the drivers are not installed, then we can install it manually with the below commands:-
amplxe-sepreg –u
amplxe-sepreg –i
While installing through above commands, if user happen to see the following message: - “Installing and starting VTSS++ driver...FAILED”, Then the possible reasons would be either:-
The memory in the system is insufficient and hence system reboot would help in most of the time.
Apart from the above error, if users encounter this error: - “PMU resources may be made unavailable either by the BIOS or Hypervisor” while “Advanced Hotspots” or any other “Event Based Sampling”:-
Cause: The cause of the above errors would be either the PMU resources are made unavailable through BIOS options else Hyper-V has been activated.
Intel® VTune Amplifier XE cannot access the PMU resources in Virtualization environment and this is the reason why Intel® VTune Amplifier XE throws the above error.
Solution: The solution to the above error is to make the PMU resources available through BIOS options (if in case it was disabled manually).
One of the root-cause for the above “PMU resources unavailable” is that the Hyper-V being enabled in Microsoft* Windows* 8, we can disable the same as mentioned below:-
On Windows* 8/8.1
Open “Windows Features”, you may open Windows Features by searching in search bar [In Start Menu]. Click on “Turn Windows* features On or Off” and then you should see a below window as shown in screenshot :-
Then you may check if “Hyper-V” is enabled. If yes, the disable “Hyper-V” and the sub-features under it. Click “Ok” and then restart the system. Note: - “Disabling Hyper-V is just one of the Workaround for the above problem, there may be other reasons also for the above error.”
